About New York, New York

History has happened in it, songs have been sang about it, books have been written on it. It has even been dubbed the Capital of the World. Does The Big Apple really need an introduction?
New York, New York. The city so nice they named it twice. It is no wonder you are considering moving here. Who wouldn’t want to stroll down the streets once walked by the likes of Woody Allen, Humphrey Bogart, Henry James, Stanley Kubrick Edgar Allan Poe, and many more? It has been said that moving to New York is the best thing that can happen to a young adult. Luckily, Cross Country Movers is here to make your dream come true.
While moving to another state is an enriching and empowering experience, it is also a difficult one, and not only from the technical point of view. The cultural shock of suddenly calling a whole different city your new home can sometimes be overwhelming. This is why it is important to get to know your future residence a little better before you actually move. Without further ado, here are some things you should know about the Big Apple.

The Neighborhoods

New York’s metropolitan area lies on over 13,000 square miles of land and is populated by more than twenty million people. The city is divided into five boroughs, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island. It, however, has several hundred different neighborhoods. Before you start packing, it might be a good idea to explore these neighborhoods and decide which one fits your needs and requirements. In order to make the task easier, you could start by creating a list of the most important criteria. For example, how important is it for you to be close to your new workplace? Would you prefer a quiet family-oriented neighborhood or a loud one populated by young people? Would you prefer living in a condo or in a house? Do you own a car? What is your moving budget? Once you have decided what it is that is the most important for you when it comes to choosing which neighborhood to move to, it is time to take a look at the neighborhoods. We have compiled a list of several ones which have been ranked the best New York neighborhoods in 2016.
-Tribeca. Tribeca is has a little bit for everyone. It is home to great public schools, and is a relatively safe neighborhood, but the costs of living are not the lowest ones you can imagine. While a job in this area might be a little harder to come by, it has great opportunities for outdoor activities, as well as great night clubs.

-Battery Park City. This neighborhood is only slightly less expensive when it comes to living costs, but it is also a little safer. The education and health systems are both in great condition. Living in this neighborhood would also mean having a significantly short daily commute. Just like Tribeca, this neighborhood offers amazing nightlife and outdoor activities.

-Roosevelt Island. This one is a little quieter than the previous two, as it is not considered much of a nightlife epicenter. It does have good schools and is quite safe, but the costs of living are relatively high. Its population is very diverse, and you would be pretty close to all of the important institutions you might need.

-Brooklyn Heights. This neighborhood carries the title of New York’s first suburb. And yes, that means longer commutes. However, this is probably one of the best neighborhoods in New York for starting a family.

-Kips Bay. Kips bay is another quiet area ideal for raising children. It is well connected by public transit and it also has a commercial strip mall. Surprisingly, Kips Bay is also one of the most affordable areas in the city.

The Climate

New York City belongs to the humid subtropical zone, while bordering the continental climate as well. With about a hundred cloudy days a year, this city’s weather is quite changeable. Winters are cold, windy, and wet. Average January temperatures slightly exceed 30 degrees. This is not to say that there aren’t oscillations, since temperatures drop to as low as 10 degrees, or jump to as high as 60 several times during the same month. Summers are relatively hot and humid, and the average daily temperature revolves around 76 degrees in July, with almost twenty days of 90+ degrees during the whole summer. The city sees about 50 inches of precipitation a year. While hurricanes are quite rare, they have occurred before.

Costs of Living

Bear no illusions. Living in New York City comes at a price – and not a low one. Monthly rent for a 900 square feet apartment in an averagely-priced area is just a couple of dollars short of $3,000, while monthly utilities for the same apartment revolve around $200. If you don’t have a car, the monthly public transport ticket will cost you extra $120 (the NYC metro does run 24/7, which makes it worth every dime). While calling the Big Apple your home comes at a price, you will know exactly what you are paying for. This city has something for everyone. Whether you are young or old, male or female, a student or a professional, an outdoor person or a computer geek, you will find out that New York City is the place for you.
While many cities flaunt the title of the “cultural capital of the world,” New York is one of the rare ones that really has the grounds to do so. Numerous cultural movements began right here, namely Harlem Renaissance, which helped promote African-American literature. The city was a major center of jazz music back in the 40s, and some thirty years later, this is where hip-hop was born. Today, New York City is home to more than two thousand cultural organizations, and flaunts over 500 art galleries. If you are passionate about art, make sure you visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or MET. If theater is more your thing, welcome to the theatrical center of the world – Broadway .

The Food

This is a tough one. If we could, we would probably dedicate a whole book to the food you can try in Big Apple. Since we had to limit ourselves to an article, here are some of our favorites.
For pizza lovers, Artichoke Basille’s is the place to go. Owned by two good friends and pizza aficionados, this restaurant is sure to satisfy even the most insatiable customers.
If you are more into Mexican food, head over to Café Habana. Our personal favorite – Grilled Steak and Corn Salad.
What about Greek food? For great Mediterranean meals, head to Nerai. Make sure you try their delicious crescent duck moussaka.
Make sure that once you are done with all these mouthwatering meals, you have enough space for a slice of the iconic New York City cheesecake. Ask any New Yorker, and they will tell you that the best place to try this delicious dessert is Junior’s.

The People

A great thing about New York is that it is the melting pot of uncountable different cultures. No matter who you are, you are not going to feel like an outsider once your chosen Houston movers help you settle in here.
Around eight hundred different languages are spoken in the boroughs. In fact, New York even has an Endangered Language Alliance for languages such as Garifuna, or Nahuatl (no, we’ve never heard of those either). The religions of New York City are many as well. While most New Yorkers are Christian, the Jewish, Muslim, and Buddhist community also make up for a large portion of the population, and so do those with no religious affiliation. The city has a developed LGBT scene, with countless theme parties for everybody.
