History of Milwaukee

Milwaukee has a long history. The first recorded inhabitants of the area that is the city today are several Native American tribes, including Menominee, Fox, Mascouten, Sauk, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and Ho-Chunk tribes. When Europeans came, they maintained a more or less good relationship with the tribes. However, after the States gained independence, a war was fought between the two, and it did not end well for the Indians. In 1833, the tribes in the Milwaukee area signed a treaty which enabled American settlement. The city got its name from the Potawatomi or Ojibwe language. The word means “a gathering place by the water.” Milwaukee was officially incorporated as a city in 1846, and has continued to grow and develop since.

People of Milwaukee

Today, Milwaukee is home to over half a million people. About half of them are white, with around forty per cent of the population being of African American descent. While Milwaukee might not be that racially diverse, it sure is diverse in other ways. For example, the Girlfriend magazine named Milwaukee the best city for lesbians in 2001. About a quarter of the population identify themselves as Catholics, and around ten per cent as Lutherans. The median age of the Milwaukee population is 31, which makes it a relatively young city. This can probably be partly explained by the fact that the city is home to the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, which attracts a significant number of young people.

Weather in Milwaukee

Milwaukee belongs to the humid continental climate zone. It has cold winters with a lot of snow and wind, while its summers are warm and humid. The warmest month is July, when the average temperatures revolve around 70 degrees. January is the coldest month, with average temperatures being 22 degrees. Thunderstorms in this region are quite common, and can, in fact, be very strong. Getting used to the weather in Milwaukee takes some time. Don’t forget your winter clothes once you start packing.

Neighborhoods of Milwaukee

There are many great neighborhoods in Milwaukee, and picking the right one might be challenging. In order to make that task easier, we suggest creating a checklist and deciding on your priorities when it comes to choosing your future home. For example, are you looking to buy or rent? Do you wish to live in a house or a condo? Do you own a car? Once you set your criteria, it is time to browse the neighborhoods. Here are some of our favorites:
- Northpoint. This neighborhood is located very close to downtown, which means that you would be just a walking distance away from lots of shops, stores, restaurants, and other amenities. This is one of the safest neighborhoods in Milwaukee, but it lacks schools, so it might not be the best one for raising children.
- Murray Hill. This is another walkable neighborhood in near vicinity to downtown. It has several schools and is also quite safe. Its drawback is that it isn’t quite the most affordable area in the city.
- Juneau Town. This is the oldest part of Milwaukee. It was named after Solomon Juneau, a fur trader. It is quite expensive, but it offers lots of amenities within walking distance, since it is, in fact, the heart of the city. It also has very low crime rates.
- Lower East Side. As its name points out, this neighborhood is located on the east part of the city. It has numerous great parks, such as the Veterans Park and the McKinley Park, as well as countless restaurants, stores, and other amenities. It is more affordable than Juneau Town, but it is still not cheap.
- Kilbourn Town. This neighborhood is located on the opposite side of the city. It has wide streets and a lot of historic buildings. This is one of the best places for shopping in the city. It has a very vivid nightlife scene, but a surprising number of excellent schools as well. It, however, has higher crime rates than the previous neighborhoods. The housing is more affordable than in the rest of Milwaukee.
