Cross Country Moving Company’s Guide to Your Relocation to Reno

Are you thinking about embarking on a cross country move to Reno, Nevada? If so, you have probably already read all about the city’s statistics, neighborhoods, and important information. However, what makes a person a true Renoite is knowing all the little hidden perks of the Biggest Little City in the World. For this reason, we at Cross Country Moving Company have decided to compile a mini-guide for your relocation, so that you feel at home in Reno from the very moment you get here. Without further ado, here are some interesting facts about Reno you should know before you start calling it your home.

The Truckee River

Running from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake, the Truckee River is a true desert oasis. Over a hundred miles long, it is the gathering place for all outdoor enthusiasts during the summer, since it offers a wide variety of activities, including rafting, kayaking, and fishing. The Home of Festivals

Reno hosts countless festivals of all kinds throughout the year. Some of the best Reno festivals which you shouldn’t miss out on are:
- Artown Festival, a month-long festival dedicated to all kinds of arts, which features numerous events and performances,
- Reno Jazz Festival, organized by the University of Nevada, Reno, featuring performances from both talented students and world-known stars of jazz music,
- Cinco de Mayo Festival, the largest celebration of Hispanic cultural heritage in Nevada,
- Reno River Festival, which takes place on the Truckee River, featuring professional and amateur competition in paddling, as well as exhibitions and other events,
- Reno Rodeo, named the wildest rodeo in the west, is a ten-day-long event that attracts more than 120,000 visitors each year,
- Hot August Nights, during which you will get the chance to see some of the most beautiful classic cars in the States. Do you need your vehicle transported to the Hot August Nights exhibition? Mountain Activities in Reno

If you are planning on moving to Reno, Nevada, you perhaps already know that it gets around three hundred sunny days a year. Maybe you even considered throwing away your winter sports gear. Not so fast! What you probably didn’t know about Reno is that it is in close vicinity of a beautiful skiing resort. To learn more about Mt. Rose Ski Resort, click here.
However, if hiking is more your style, don’t worry – Reno has something to offer to you too. Just head westward, and pretty soon you will stumble upon the Tahoe National Forest, where you can hike to your heart’s content.

The Reno Food

One of the amazing things about living in a town that attracts a significant amount of tourists each year is the fact that food places are constantly competing with each other over who can wow the visitors more. More often than not, this results in epic food choices for Reno locals as well. Our personal favorite food destinations include Men Wielding Fire, Peg’s Glorified Ham and Eggs, and Homage Bakery.
Another great perk of Reno when it comes to food is its street food scene. Food trucks can be found all over Reno, and the best time to give them a shot is the Reno Street Food Friday, held every week from May to October.
And what is the point of all that food if you don’t have a good beer to flush it down with? Luckily, craft beer is Reno’s favorite drink. We suggest visiting the Silver Peak Brewery and trying their Sierra Amber Ale – it is absolutely stunning.

Reno’s Downtown Area

Every Reno local knows – Downtown is for the tourists. The downtown area of Reno is notorious for its high crime rates, dirty streets and a high number of homeless people. It is also flooded with bars, casinos, and, of course, tourists. It is not exactly the picture-perfect neighborhood for raising a family. On the upside, all the surrounding areas of the city are excellent neighborhoods with a high living standard. They have low crime rates, zero environmental issues, and vast recreational opportunities. They also offer numerous employment opportunities and excellent schools. Some of the best neighborhoods in Reno include:
- South Reno. While it may not be the most inexpensive area of the city, this neighborhood offers a high number of amenities in close vicinity. It has decent employment opportunities and relatively low crime rates. It also boasts a high income per capita and high graduation rates.
- Southwest. Another neighborhood on the more expensive side, this one has numerous amenities and excellent schools. It has a relatively steady real estate market and is pretty safe. However, employment opportunities are a little scarce.
- Old Northwest-West University. This area is a lot more affordable than the previous two, while it offers the same high number of amenities. It is, however, not known as the safest area of the city, and its employment opportunities are not numerous.
- North Valleys. This is one of the most affordable neighborhoods in the city. However, living here means you will definitely need a car. This area is not home to a large number of schools and employers, and its crime rates are higher than average.
