A Guide For Your Cross Country Move to Las Vegas

I live in Las Vegas and I love it. I can walk down any street, into any restaurant, at any time of day or night. All the little quirks and oddities of the Vegas lifestyle are quite natural to me.

The Las Vegas Strip with its extravagant, dramatic architecture and lights, Elvis impersonators at every corner, seeing all the different types of strange people that flood the Vegas strip on weekends and holidays - when you live in Las Vegas, all of these become everyday occurrences.

In Las Vegas you will never run out of things to do. Not only is it one of the cheaper “major“ cities to live in, it definitely has a lot to offer. First things that come to mind when you think of Las Vegas are the casinos and gambling, and although this is true and you can place a bet on pretty much anything except the lottery here, this is a rather simplistic view on what the city has to offer. There are countless live music shows, cirque shows, magic shows, lounge shows and conventions. Las Vegas may very well be the entertainment capital of the world.

So if you’re planning to pack your whole life into boxes and move to Las Vegas, here’s a guide to Vegas by someone who calls it home.

Sunshine all year long!

Las Vegas is the sunniest city in the USA and at only 4 inches of rainfall per year it is one of the driest cities too. In July, which is the hottest month of the year, you can expect around 104°F by day, and about 80°F at night, though the heat is moderated by the low humidity. While winter is much cooler, sunshine is still abundant. Although it doesn't snow in the city during the winter, the surrounding mountains are covered with snow so you can go skiing and snowboarding.

Consistent sunshine, low humidity, and warm temperatures appeal to a lot of people, which may be the reason that Las Vegas has seen significant growth in population recently.

Getting around

Downtown is easily navigable by foot or bike and on a five minute walk you will find at least three cafes, bars or restaurants.

If you need to go somewhere further, you can always hop on a bus. The bus system is well developed and all the buses are air-conditioned. This is the cheapest way to get around the city. You can find maps, information about the bus routes, fees and schedules on The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada’s website .

Most locals will tell you that a car is the best way of navigating the city. Whether you are planning on renting a car from time to time, buying a car or using a car shipping company to ship a car you already own, keep in mind that Las Vegas is not a street in a desert filled with casinos. In fact, the city is enormous. Except for the Strip, the rush hour in Vegas is very mild compared to other cities of similar size. Outside of rush hour the traffic is relatively light and parking isn’t at all hard to find.

Housing options

Just because your cross country move is taking you to Las Vegas that doesn't mean you can’t enjoy the quiet life in the suburbs. In fact, most of the residential areas are nowhere near the Las Vegas Strip.

One of the more popular suburbs is Summerlin. It's popular among people who want to live in a house with a yard, with good schools and parks in the area. It is located west of downtown and it is quickly expanding, in the 10 year period between 2000 and 2010 it has almost doubled its size.
You can check out Summerlin real estate market here .
Southeast of Summerlin lies its companion Henderson. It has a population of more than 250,000 and Forbes ranked it the second safest city in USA.

On the other hand, if you prefer being close to all the things Sin City is famous for, you can look into housing options in the Downtown Las Vegas. It is unquestionably one of the most exciting places to live in the US. There are plenty of deluxe housing options here such as The Newport , Soho Lofts , the Ogden  and many more.
Curiously, a good portion of the Las Vegas Strip technically isn't in Las Vegas. It is in Paradise, and so are the McCarran International Airport and the University of Nevada. But paradise is not just a tourist area - it offers many living options and the most interesting of them are in hotels like Trump International and the MGM Grand.

Job Opportunities

Since the city is world famous as the Entertainment Capital of the World, you can easily find a job in the hospitality industry. There are many casinos, hotels, bars and restaurants you could work at. For example, if you see yourself as a future bartender, you could learn to mix some cocktails and easily earn 100,000$ a year. But this is in no way the only employment opportunity. Vegas takes a really serious approach to its employment growth and economic development.

Low Taxes

Another thing that might motivate you to move across country to Vegas is the benefit of not having an income tax, as well as low property taxes. If you want to know more, you can find a property tax calculator for Nevada here .
The sales tax is pretty high, but luckily, consumers pay this tax on only 37.4% of goods, since many consumer goods and food are tax exempt. For example, a family with a yearly income of 150,000$ will have an average tax rate of only 5.6%.

Food

If you are moving here and enjoy eating out, you will be curious to know that Vegas was rated one of the top ten locations in the country for great food. From small fast food places to five-star restaurants, Vegas has it all. Whatever food you find yourself craving you will find more often than not. Another good news is that not all Las Vegas restaurants are luxurious and expensive. In fact, if you look hard enough, you are bound to find a number of affordable restaurants with food that is still delicious and mouthwatering. Some of my favorites are:
Peppermill Restaurant  offers a wide variety of burgers, steaks, and sandwiches. It is famous for its big portions.
El Dorado Cantina  serves traditional Mexican food at affordable prices.
Grimaldi’s Pizzeria  has all kinds of pizzas. My personal favorite is pizza with bacon, jalapenos, and ricotta cheese.
Crown and Anchor works all day and all night long. It serves traditional British food and draft beers from all around the world.
To find more great locations for dining out in Las Vegas, I encourage you to go out and explore the city. You are bound to find your new favorite place in no time.

Weekend activities

If you would like to get out of the Sin City for a weekend, there are some popular hiking areas around Vegas like Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Red Rock Canyon, and The Valley of Fire. Also, keep in mind that Los Angeles and the Grand Canyon are just a 4-5 hour drive away.
